Don't forget to enjoy all that the Baltic Sea has to offer during summertime, and remember to cherish it – by not leaving discarded fishing gear or litter of any kind. We wish you all a pleasant summer! ☀️#marelittbaltic #ghostnets #balticsea
This week was the start for diving activities on wrecks off the Swedish south coast. Diving activities has already been carried out in Germany and will also be carried out in both Estonia and Poland during the summer 🐟
Today, we’ve celebrated a birthday during our partner meeting in Stockholm! 🎉We’ve also had interesting conversations about the activities at sea this summer – diving operations starting next week, upcoming site-visits and the final conference next year.
With the amount of harmful plastic litter in oceans and seas growing ever greater, the European Commission is proposing new EU-wide rules to target the 10 single-use plastic products most often found on Europe's beaches and seas, as well as lost and abandoned fishing gear! 🌍🌊
A perfect day to meet in Warsaw! ☀️On today’s agenda: analysis of the results from operations at sea, discuss lessons learnt and a develop post-project plan 👍🏼
Nice weather during yesterdays dragging operation just outside Ystad, Sweden ☀️

Last day in Stralsund 🇩🇪The participants are discussing lessons learned 👍🏼 Some of the conclusions:
- Material recycling is very difficult with retrieved fishing gear.
- It is most difficult with gillnets.
- Pre-processing in harbours are necessary.
- The best option for the recycling of gillnets is thermal processing through hydrolysis.
- The best option for uniform materials is recycling with polymer matrix of prestine material.
- Processing (shredding, washing, density separation) is cost-, time-, energyexpensive.

So, what recycling options would be possible for ghost nets? Andrea Stolte from WWF Germany share some details about the difficulties in handling such mixed materials ♻️ #marelittbaltic #ghostnets #balticsea #recycle
We would rather see recycled plastics than microplastics! 👍🏼#marelittbaltic #ghostnets #balticsea #microplastic #recycle
Let’s get started! 3 days workshop in Stralsund, Germany, on the topic ”Recycling of lost fishing gear”.
